Its not been a stunning year to date here, but good catches have produced the odd new moth for the garden.

Dark Spectacle Cambridge 05 Jul 09

The first Dark Spectacle Abrostola triplasia for the garden. According to the Waring/Lewington guide, this species prefers areas with acidic soils. Unexpected on the calcareous, clay-ridden alkaline stuff around CB1.

Farcet Fen moths, 4-5 July 09

After two weeks away and missing all this great mothing weather, I was itching to get the traps out when I returned home. First up was the 160w MVB which brought me a 50+ species, 400+ individual insect catch, followed on Saturday night with the 15w actinic which produced the expected much lower numbers, but did manage a first for the garden - The Miller.

Hummingbird Hawkmoth, Farcet Fen

Whilst having dinner this evening I was amazed when I looked up to view out of the velux roof window to find a roosting Hummer! I've had them in the garden every I have lived here, I've had them roosting on the outside of the house (up to three) and I've caught them in the moth trap at night - but this is the first time we've ever had one enter the house and roost! It had a large enough entrance though, as we had our folding sliding doors open, so the whole end wall of the kitchen (9ftx6ft) was open.
